Change My Favorite Recipes? I Don't Think So!

Turkey and cranberry burgers: Low fat burger versionSuggesting that you make any changes to your grandmother's sacred brownie recipe or your beloved casserole dish may sound like sacrilege, but did you know you really can make some healthy recipe substitutions without sacrificing taste? You may ask yourself, "How is this possible?"

Well, I'll tell you.

Sometimes it's as simple as using low-fat versions of ingredients (like skim milk instead of whole milk). Other times you can swap one ingredient for a healthier alternative (whole wheat flour in place of white flour). You may even be able to reduce or eliminate one ingredient entirely without changing the food's taste. Finally, changing the cooking method certainly affects how healthy the final product will be.

One Quick and Easy Recipe to Get You Started

Hamburgers are a classic American food, and with warmer weather (hopefully) returning in the near future, you may be eager to fire up your grill. Unfortunately, depending on how you make them, hamburgers can be high in fat. And for people watching their cholesterol, red meat in general isn't a great idea. So what can you do?

I'm a Midwestern woman who loves red meat as much as anyone, so I was shocked at how delicious this low fat recipe turned out to be!

Turkey and Cranberry Burgers

  • ½ cup finely shredded carrots
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced green onions
  • 2 tablespoons fine dry bread crumbs
  • ¼ teaspoon dried and crushed Italian seasoning
  • 2 tablespoons fat-free milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 12 ounces uncooked ground turkey or chicken breast

Mix ½ cup finely shredded carrots, ¼ cup thinly sliced green onions, 2 tablespoons fine dry bread crumbs, ¼ teaspoon dried and crushed Italian seasoning, 2 tablespoons fat-free milk, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper. Then add 12 ounces uncooked ground turkey or chicken breast. Shape the final mixture into four ½-inch-thick patties.

Put the patties on a greased grill rack over medium coals and cook them for 12-15 minutes or until they're done (flip them over halfway through), or you can broil them for 11-13 minutes. Add cranberry sauce to the bun for extra flavor and juiciness. Each burger only has 283 calories and 2 grams of fat!
