A Quick and Easy, (But Not Especially Healthy) Milkshake Recipe

Recipe makeover: From milkshake to smoothieAh, milkshakes—part of an American meal, right? You could picture that iconic image of two sweethearts in the 50s sipping from their own straws out of the same milkshake glass, or you and friends guzzling down a Shamrock Shake on St. Patrick's Day. Whatever your favorite milkshake moment is, you might want to think about altering it slightly and drinking a Smoothie instead.

Never! You may say. But think about it--here's one quick and easy recipe for a homemade strawberry milkshake (it serves two):

  • ½ cup light cream
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 cup vanilla or strawberry ice cream
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 2 tbsp. crushed ice

Then you put all of those ingredients into a blender and blend it until it's thick. Or, if you're feeling lazy, you could grab a McDonald's shake that's filled with water, sugar, glucose syrup, strawberry juice concentrate, and other artificial flavors. That shake contains a whopping 505 calories, 117 of which come from fat. The shake also has 8g of saturated fat, which is 40 percent of your recommended daily value.

Now, a Superfood Recipe Makeover

You can have a drink that's just as delicious, but far more healthy, than that strawberry milkshake. Best of all, it's choc full of superfoods. So here's a recipe for Berries 'n Banana Green Power Smoothie:

  • 2 leaves organic kale
  • Handful of organic baby spinach
  • 1 Tbsp. flax
  • 1 handful frozen strawberries
  • Just under ¼ cup organic frozen blueberries
  • 3 sprigs of parsley
  • 1 medium ripened banana
  • 1 cup unsweetened Almond breeze

Don't be surprised when, after you blend these ingredients together, the final smoothie is green in color. It really does taste good! Best of all, it only has 280-300 calories and provides you with a wealth of healthy vitamins and minerals.
